Spring 2 Term 2020
Let’s go back in time to ‘Britain in the Blitz’ and begin to understand the impact of war on Britain.
Reading will be taught through our core text: ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’ by Michelle Magorian.
In writing, we will be covering a range of genres as we study the text, including descriptive writing, a campaign speech, a biography and a newspaper report. Later on in the term, the children will also be writing some poetry linked to the bombings over Britain.
As mathematicians, we will be learning and applying a wide range of maths skills, including converting units, calculating perimeter, area and volume and exploring and investigating ratio.
In history, we will be investigating the question, ‘How was World War II a significant turning point both in Cornwall and for the world?’ We will be using different sources to find out about propaganda and will be developing our understanding of the chronology of key events. We will find out about how rationing affected people and learn what happened during the Blitz and how people were affected around the world.
Our science topic will be ‘Light’ and how we see things; linking to role light played during WW2. The children will identify and explore reflection and refraction. Once again, we are fortunate to have Mr Pidwell with us again for a ‘light workshop’.
In art, we will be exploring WWII related art by the artist Henry Moore. We will be developing our sketching skills and exploring mood and colour and expressing these using different media such as pencil, pastel and chalk. In DT, we will be using various fabrics in a ‘Make do and Mend’ project.
During PSHE, we will be thinking about what it means to ‘be me in my world.’ We will link this to the differences that divided communities during the War and how we have moved forward to celebrate our differences. We will consider how British values were tested in WW2.
KS2 SATs (Monday 11th May- Thursday 14th May)
Towards the end of the first half of the Summer term, the children will be taking part in SATs week. The children have worked incredibly hard this year and this will be their moment to shine even brighter! I hope the children enjoy the week as much as we do. Every effort is made to ensure the children feel confident, self- assured and happy. Like previous years, each day will begin with a ‘Brainy Breakfast’ to get everyone in a positive frame of mind which is extremely important! This early start will begin at 8am where the children will participate in 10 minutes of physical activity, enjoy a delicious breakfast and benefit from 20 minutes of top- up revision sessions suited to that day’s SATs paper. It’s a fabulous, fun way to start each day!
Once SATS week is complete, we will then begin auditioning and rehearsing for our Y6 Leaver’s Production, ready for a July performance. We can’t wait!
Finally, we are also looking forward to our annual London trip which takes place June 17th- 19th. We will be holding a parent meeting (date tbc) to provide vital information about the trip.
